Healing After Loss: The Sacred Closing of the Bones Ceremony

Losing a child is an unimaginable journey—one that requires profound healing of body, heart, and spirit. In times of deep grief, it can be difficult to feel whole again. The Mesoamerican ritual of Closing of the Bones offers a sacred, therapeutic way to support mothers after child loss, helping them to release, realign, and reclaim their own energy.

This ancient ceremony is rooted in the wisdom of indigenous healers who understood that the body, like the spirit, carries the weight of grief. Through Closing of the Bones, mothers can find a compassionate space to honor their loss, let go of trauma, and find restoration and comfort.

What is Closing of the Bones?

The Closing of the Bones ceremony is a ritual practice that involves energetically and physically “closing” or sealing the body after a life-changing experience like childbirth—or in this case, the loss of a child. When mothers experience a profound loss, their bodies and spirits undergo an intense “opening,” which needs compassionate care and closure to heal.

This sacred ritual gently guides grieving mothers through a process of releasing grief, balancing energy, and reconnecting with their inner strength

How It Works: A Compassionate Path to Healing

Closing of the Bones session is a nurturing journey that uses rebozo wrapping, massage, herbal heat compresses, and other traditional techniques to soothe the body and soul. These movements encourage emotional release, physical relaxation, and a sense of gentle closure that helps mothers process grief and find grounding

Steps in the Ceremony Include:

  1. Rebozo Wrapping
A rebozo, or traditional Mexican shawl, is used to wrap and gently hold different parts of the body. This process provides a feeling of being “held” in a safe space and offers a soothing comfort. Each wrap represents support, helping the mother release held grief and begin to feel more grounded.
  2. Warm Herbal Compresses
Carefully chosen herbs are warmed and applied to the body’s energy centers, such as the abdomen, chest, and back. These herbs are known for their comforting and healing properties, helping to ease tension and soothe the heart.
  3. Gentle Massage and Closing Movements
The practitioner guides the body through gentle massage and “closing” techniques that represent sealing energy and emotions, fostering a sense of calm and protection. This physical act of “closing” can bring emotional relief and a renewed feeling of self.

The Healing Power of Closing the Bones After Child Loss
